Jewels of Europe – Day 2

It had been raining since yesterday and today didn’t promise anything different.  We went for a walk to get acquainted with the area and to have dinner at a restaurant named Benedict. There were areas of deserted streets and others of big crowds. In one of the crowded streets, a man was squatting, with his pants around his knees , dropping a big load on the footpath.  He did cover it with paper, as we saw on our way back. Seems in old town, you have to be careful not to only step in dog poo – of which there seemed to be none. Lots of places where there was human ones though. We got back to the hotel without getting lost and had a good night’s sleep.

The next day, we had a walking tour booked, to visit some of the historical places which were under communist control and also to go into one of the many underground nuclear shelters which are around Prague.   We saw where the KGB had their headquarters during this time and also the buildings and site of the Velvet revolution.  The KGB headquarters are now the building which houses the Prague Police HQ.

The Hanging Man

From this area,  we caught a tram to one of the many nuclear bunkers, located within the precincts of Prague. We were shown one  section of five, which comprised this one bunker and was designed to hold 1000 people and a total of 5000. It would have been a living hell, five stories underground.

The huge antenna nearby,  was erected by the soviets to scramble and block any incoming “propoganda” from the west and it is interesting to zoom in and see the additions the Czeck  people have put in on the mast.

Back onto another tram for the journey back to the city centre, where we got out to find the main railway station for the departure in two days time.   I also had to find a store and buy a pair of pyjamas, as I had forgotten to pack some. We had dinner at the Kolkovna Celnice restaurant,  close by the marriott and called it a day.
